I have the honor to acknowledge the receipt of your Lordship's Despatch. No. 25 of the 6th April, relative to the re-appointment of Mr. Caldwell to office by my Predecessor and requiring explanation of the cause of Mr. Caldwell's difficulties; and to be informed whether his conduct during his continuance in office was unimpeachable, or otherwise.
Not having been personally on the spot when Mr. Caldwell's resignation of office took place, I cannot of my own knowledge afford your Lordship the information required. I therefore ordered that Mr. Caldwell himself should be called on to supply a statement
